Helping Hope Dawn in Nebraska with Effective Drug Rehabilitation

A Nebraska landscape

The top drug wreaking havoc in Nebraska is not one that’s making headlines across the country. It’s alcohol, pure and simple.Alcohol is the primary cause of admission to drug and alcohol rehab centers in Nebraska. Only Colorado and South Dakota—both bordering Nebraska—have the same magnitude of drug treatment admissions for alcohol.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that Nebraska has a much higher rate of alcohol-impaired driving than the national average: 3.4% of drivers compared to 1.9% nationally. More men lose their lives to alcohol-related causes than the national average as well.

The University of Nebraska has teamed up with Lincoln law enforcement and community members to bring down the alcohol consumption of its students. Back in the 1990s, the University faced a binge drinking rate of 60% among students—far above the national average. After more than a decade of work, the binge drinking rate fell to 44% for male students and 29% for female students. In 2012, 32% of their students said they had drunk to blackout but by 2014, the rate was 22%, below the national average. Complaints of drunken parties in the campus town fell 70%. Still, one young man died from alcohol poisoning in a fraternity house in 2014, emphasizing the fact that excessive alcohol use can still cause tragedy.

Despite the high need for drug and alcohol rehab in the state, much progress has been made in alleviating some of the worst damage. The number of alcohol-related crashes and fatalities has been falling steadily due to preventative legislation that has been enacted, such as interlock laws for those convicted of DUI. An interlock device on a car registers the alcohol level of the owner and will prevent the car from starting if the level is too high.

Among Nebraska children who are taken into the foster care system, parental substance abuse was found in 68% of these cases. In the majority of these cases, the substance being used was methamphetamine. This drug, in particular, is associated with high levels of child neglect and injury. Most years, more than 3,000 youth are removed from their homes each year because of neglect or abuse.

For over fifty years, the Narconon drug rehabilitation program has been returning the addicted to sober, productive lives. From Nebraska, a person might choose the Narconon center in Fort Collins, Colorado or the one due south in Oklahoma. There are other choices, such as Louisiana, California and Florida.

In every center, this program that has helped over 40,000 individuals is consistent. Following a drug-free withdrawal, one then begins on the next step which is a deep detoxification action called the New Life Detoxification. This action utilizes a sauna to enable each person to flush out old, stored drug toxins shown to continually affect mood, outlook and cravings. When you combine time in a sauna with a specific regimen of nutritional supplements and moderate exercise, the body’s ability to dislodge old toxins stored in fatty tissues is activated. The sweating in the sauna washes these residues away. The result is a brighter outlook, more energy and reduced cravings. Some people even talk about how their physical cravings are gone.

This is followed by a series of precise procedures called the objectives. This is where a person can reclaim control of his choices, his actions, and objects in his environment. Day by day, each person improves his perceptions of the real world around him. Trauma and pain from the past have less power to disturb his thinking or derail his sobriety. Life begins to look hopeful again.

Now it’s time for a person to learn the specific skills that help keep him safe in his day-to-day life after rehab. It starts with learning how some people may look friendly but actually wish one harm. Each student learns the characteristics of these people and learns also how to deal with them. He also spots such personalities in his past so he can free himself from their influence.

Next, he (or she) will learn about qualities like self-respect, personal integrity and honesty and how these qualities were ruined during his addiction. But all is not lost—he also learns how to find relief from the harm he did to himself and others. This relief means he can now give himself a chance at a future happy life.

Finally, he learns how to approach problems and damage he needs to repair. He learns specific tools to help him restore relationships with family, friends and community.

Now this person has his best chance at a lasting, productive sobriety. And when he can stay sober, his whole family and community have the benefit of his best qualities.

With Colorado tucked under Nebraska’s panhandle, there have been an increasing number of pot seizures and arrests as the drug became more freely available across the state line. In Nebraska, small possessions of the drug are only minimally penalized with fines and perhaps a drug education course.

In Deuel County, located in the corner of that panhandle, one in seven traffic stops turns out to involve some kind of drug activity. Those leaving Denver on a direct route to Chicago or Detroit will take Interstate 80 and that takes them through the heart of Nebraska. Some of the dealers making this risky trip state that their customers back home want that high-quality pot being sold in Colorado.

Pot and alcohol are not the only problems in Nebraska. In 2015, law enforcement agencies spread the word about blends of synthetic drugs that were sending dozens of people to emergency rooms. Because some people have these chemicals shipped directly to them from China and other Asian countries, it’s hard to detect them on usual drug trafficking routes.
