Drug Rehab for Mississippi
ON THIS PAGE

Mississippi doesn’t often make headlines and that might be good since most headlines are alarming. This is a state where the population is still deeply religious and Southern manners are revered. It’s largely rural, with population centered around the Gulf Coast, Jackson and the area adjacent to Memphis in the north. But just like the rest of the United States, Mississippi has not escaped the onslaught of drug abuse and addiction that has ruined and stolen hundreds of thousands of lives.
Unlike other states, however, Mississippi still has a severe problem with cocaine—either in powder form or in the crystallized form called crack. According to law enforcement across the Gulf Coast, cocaine is still readily available, along with methamphetamine, pharmaceutical drugs, and marijuana. There’s heroin in the state, but not a lot of it, which might be an advantage for Mississippians.
Helping Mississippi Families Heal

Families tend to be close in Mississippi, so when one of their own falls to addiction, everyone suffers right along with the addicted person. What Mississippi needs is an effective solution for addiction to help these individuals get their lives right again.
Within reach of Mississippi are two Narconon drug rehab centers. One is located just outside Baton Rouge in a secluded, wooded setting. The other facility is a short drive from Tampa, Florida and is surrounded by gardens suitable for walking and reflecting.
A Thorough Detoxification Step Starts the Recovery
In both locations, the Narconon program helps people turn their lives around. Narconon offers a drug-free approach to recovery based on a social education model. Whereas some programs utilize long-term substitute medications as a means of treatment, the goal of Narconon is to eliminate an individual’s dependence on drugs. In the case where a person is using heavy alcohol, benzodiazepines or certain other drugs, they most likely would require a medically assisted wean down which would be completed before starting the drug-free withdrawal at Narconon. A person needing medication for a physical condition would, of course, continue that medication on the advice of his physician.
Drug-free withdrawal at Narconon enables a person to fully come off the addictive substances through the use of nutritional supplements and special techniques that help alleviate pain and discomfort that are common effects of withdrawal. Many report this as being the most tolerable withdrawal they have ever experienced.
Once a person has safely come off drugs or alcohol, they begin the New Life Detoxification program. It’s not like any procedure used in a medical detox. This is a deep tissue detox utilizing time in a low-heat sauna, moderate exercise and a strict regimen of nutritional supplements. These three factors work together to draw old, lodged drug toxins out of the fatty tissues of the body. Even years after drug use stops, some residues from past drug or alcohol use remain. This detox washes them away.
At the end of this step, many people say they can finally think more clearly. Some people say they feel like they did before they started using drugs. It’s quite common to hear that cravings are greatly reduced—some people even say they are gone.
When a person can think more clearly, he has a chance to learn new sober living skills. Anyone embarking on a new sobriety needs the ability to work through challenges and come up with a sober solution to events that might at one time have sent him back to drugs or drinks. That’s the focus of the life skills component of the Narconon Program
A Gradual Approach to Sober Living Skills
One thing is certain: When a person first gets sober, there are hard days. His (or her) guilt over the harm done to others or self and a persistent sense of shame can make early recovery quite challenging. Each person needs a way to work through this barrier so he can approach his new sober life with confidence. Step by gentle step, the Narconon life skills training walks a person through this process.
First, each person learns why some people make dangerous associates or friends and some people can be trusted. He learns how to use this information to identify people in his past who may have sent him down the road to drug use or drunkenness. Weeding these people out of his life provides a sense of relief.
Next, he learns how he yielded his own integrity in his past words and deeds. He learns how this integrity can be recovered and puts this knowledge to work. It’s very common for those finishing this step to talk about the “weight being lifted” from them. This is the change that’s needed for them to give themselves a chance at an enjoyable life in the future.
Finally, he learns how to deal with challenging situations or relationships so that upsets in the future won’t send him looking for a drug.
Working with the staff, he now uses what he learned to develop a plan to repair the relationships he wrecked back home and get honest as a family and community member. Contact with Narconon staff over the next two years helps him stay on the right path.
