Nicky Hopkins – Rock and Roll’s Greatest Session Man

A musical genius, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
Nicky was born in England in 1944, legend has it, during one of the air raids at that time.
A musical prodigy from an early age, Nicky received a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music of London, studying classical music.
Nicky was a rare mixture of a classically trained musician and a Rock and Roll session man. With the depth that came with his training and wide experienced, Nicky became the session man of choice for bands ranging from The Who, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, The Beatles, and John Lennon, Rod Stewart, Jerry Garcia, the Steve Miller Band, and playing the piano with Jefferson Airplane, at the legendary ’69 Woodstock Festival. The list is as incredible as it is endless.

All the greats remember him in their own ways, as the one who made them greater.
Nicky’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the documentary featuring his life’s work, The Session Man, show the high regard, the respect and the love his fellow musicians held for him.
In the legendary Rock and Roll period that surrounded Nicky, the drug culture was as alluring as it was destructive. He started using in the ’60s and after ten-plus years of abuse, he had hit bottom. When his doctor told him he had weeks left if he continued with his drug abuse, he turned to his friends for help and found the Narconon program.
He completed the Narconon program in California in 1979, and continued to create as a musician, without the crutch of deadly drugs. Here’s what he had to say upon completing the Narconon program:
“I began using drugs in 1968. For a while it seemed I had found the magic key to life. Over the years, however, my life and my music became increasingly damaged. I tried a few times to clean up, but with no success…”
“Then I heard about and entered the Narconon Program… I wanted help and Narconon gave it.”
“I am now completely free of the desire to take drugs.”
To be part of Nicky’s life and to be able to help him through the Narconon program was an honor and a privilege.
