Drug Rehab for Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is hemmed in on all sides by an assault by heroin and synthetic opioids. Ohio to the west has a pervasive heroin and painkiller problem and has been described as being “ground zero” for the opioid epidemic. West Virginia to the south has the highest rate of overdose deaths in the country. Urban areas on the East Coast have long been magnets for criminal organizations that want to reap profits from drug distribution. And so it seems that escape from this curse is difficult for Pennsylvania families.

The intensity of the problem varies greatly by region. In 2015, the Pennsylvania counties with 100 or more overdose deaths were:

  • Philadelphia
  • Montgomery
  • Bucks
  • Delaware
  • Lehigh
  • Chester
  • Westmoreland
  • Allegheny
York County, Pennsylvania
York County, Pennsylvania

There were only two counties with no deaths reported: Warren and Sullivan, both rural counties—although that is no guarantee the region will be spared. In the southwest part of the state, the rate of death was the highest at 32.9 deaths per 100,000 population. The southeast corner around Philadelphia was the site of 29.1 deaths per 100,000.

In Northwestern cities like Philadelphia, New York and Boston, the drug supply can change rapidly. A drug or a dose that seemed safe yesterday can be fatal today. Pennsylvania went through high levels of overdoses of synthetic drugs in 2015 but those are seldom fatal. When fentanyl began to be added to the supply of heroin or the ingredients making up counterfeit pills, this shift has often turned out to be life-threatening.

Sobriety is the only way a person can be completely safe from serious drug-related injury or death. But sobriety can be difficult to achieve. Some people consider it nearly impossible to achieve so they focus their efforts on reducing the harm of addiction without placing much hope for lasting sobriety. Many drug rehabs ensure each client is given methadone or buprenorphine but fail to add a concentrated effort on educating their clients on how to protect their sobriety. In some rehabs, there is no effort or intention to wean a person off these medications that substitute for the drugs the person was abusing.

But at Narconon drug rehab centers around the world, the focus is on one result: lasting sobriety after rehab. The program is designed to help a person address the damage created by the years spent addicted and then rebuild the skills they need to maintain a healthy sobriety after they go home.

This is a drug-free program, meaning no substitute drugs are administered as part of the rehabilitation process. Instead, the emphasis is on supporting a person with generous use of nutritional supplements to ease withdrawal and aid detoxification from drugs or alcohol. Gentle assists are also given to help a person focus on the present so they can begin to gather hope that the future can be better and healthier than the past. When it is determined that a medically assisted wean down is required for a person to step down from their current level of drug use we work with medical detox services to complete this before a person starts the Narconon program. A person needing medication for a physical condition would, of course, continue that medication on the advice of his physician.

Narconon New Life Detox.

Once a person is free from the immediate effects of the drugs or alcohol they were consuming, they will begin the Narconon program. The first step is a thorough, sauna-based detox that’s unlike anything offered at any other rehab program. The combination of time in a low-heat sauna, moderate daily exercise and a strictly-controlled regimen of nutritional supplements results in an increased ability to flush out old stored drug toxins. These toxic residues have been lodged in fatty tissues of the body, building up for years.

Without this specific combination of actions, it is difficult for a person’s body to wash these residues away. In the sauna, the body sweats them out and a dark, hopeless attitude toward life is often replaced by one that is more optimistic. Many people talk about how their thinking is clearer and it’s often mentioned that cravings are more manageable, sometimes even gone. With a brighter outlook, it’s now possible to begin to repair the emotional damage done by addiction.

The step called the objectives is composed of a series of exercises that help draw a person’s attention out of the past and into the present. The past is where the pain and fear are. The present is where a person can rebuild his skills and plan his future sober life. Day by day, the present looks brighter and a person regains control of his choices, actions and even his thinking.

In the final phase of recovery, each person must relearn the skills that will protect their sobriety. After all, in the past, just drinking or reaching for drugs was enough to blot out any upset or pain. They didn’t really have to deal with life itself. To remain sober, they’ll need these skills.

Life Skills.

They start with an understanding of how association with the wrong people can end their happiness and sobriety. They’ll learn how to identify safe and unsafe associates and how to deal with each personality type. They move on to grasping a lesson on how integrity is lost and how they can regain their own self-respect. Because self-respect is destroyed by addiction, this lesson provides a huge relief for Narconon clients.

The final lesson is on addressing and resolving problems, setbacks, and damaged relationships. When all these lessons are complete, each person’s sobriety is greatly strengthened and protected.

When an epidemic like this one runs rampant, you get stories like this one: In the fall of 2016, a seven-year-old girl in Allegheny County took the bus to school one day but on the way home, told the driver that she could not wake her parents up. In fact, she had been trying for the past day. The driver told authorities who found three other children between nine months and five years of age in the home with the parents who had died of overdoses. No child should ever experience this kind of trauma or loss.
