Narconon Suncoast Hosts Gathering for Graduates and Supporters in Clearwater

 

Narconon Suncoast, Florida’s premier Narconon drug rehabilitation center, hosted a gathering of graduates, supporters, current and former staff, volunteers, and friends on May 30, 2026. In Suncoast's auditorium, guests enjoyed a buffet dinner as they came together to celebrate, honor Narconon's history, and recognize those who have dedicated their lives to helping others overcome addiction. The evening was emceed by Patty Schwartz of Friends of Narconon International.

 

Located on a serene seven-acre property at 1390 Sunset Point Road in Clearwater, Florida, Narconon Suncoast is licensed by the Florida Department of Children and Families as both a residential treatment center and an inpatient detox facility. It holds Joint Commission accreditation in behavioral healthcare, including the Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval. The center runs the Narconon program, which includes a supported, drug-free withdrawal through the New Life Detoxification and the life skills training that follows, without substitute drugs.

Acknowledging Graduates and Staff

The evening's gathering opened with a group photograph of the graduates present, then photographs with current and former staff, volunteers, and supporters to commemorate the occasion. Schwartz followed by welcoming the attendees and recognizing graduates according to their years of sobriety, honoring milestones of five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, and fifty years. Current and former staff were also acknowledged for their dedication and lasting contributions to the program.

 

From Humble Beginnings to a Worldwide Network

Schwartz then took attendees back to Narconon's roots in 1966, recounting how the first program was established by William Benitez while incarcerated in an Arizona prison. Employing principles from the writings of L. Ron Hubbard to kick an eighteen-year heroin habit, Benitez organized a pilot course with fellow inmates likewise suffering from addiction.

Guest speaker Arte Maren, one of the pioneers of Narconon's early expansion, continued the story: Shortly thereafter, Benitez enlisted Mr. Hubbard’s permission and support to found a formal Narconon program. Upon his release in 1967, which was delayed by choice to complete implementation of the program, Benitez founded the first Narconon residential center in California. Maren reflected on establishing Narconon Los Angeles and spoke about the purpose and fulfillment found in helping others reclaim their lives fraught with drug and alcohol addiction. Following Schwartz's presentation of a commendation from Narconon International, Maren received a standing ovation.

 

A First Female Graduate and a Center Report

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation by Jeannie Trahant, the first woman to complete the Narconon program. She described finding Narconon Los Angeles in 1973 after searching for a way out of addiction and a new direction in life. Through the program, she experienced profound personal change and discovered a purpose that inspired her to join staff immediately after graduating. More than five decades later, she continues helping others achieve the same freedom from addiction that transformed her own life.

After the Event

Bringing together Narconon pioneers, long-term graduates, staff, and supporters, the gathering celebrated six decades of lives restored through the Narconon program. Today, Narconon Suncoast continues that mission in Clearwater, providing rehabilitation and drug education services to individuals and families throughout Florida.
