Narconon Japan Increases Public Outreach as Concerns Over Drug Abuse Grow

As Japan faces growing concerns over drug abuse, including the spread of methamphetamine, marijuana, and the misuse of prescription drugs, organizations dedicated to prevention and rehabilitation have become increasingly important.
Executive Director Masahiro Kamino and Deputy Executive Director Yumie Umakawa of Narconon Japan have steadily expanded their drug education and prevention activities, bringing practical information about addiction and recovery to schools, communities, and government offices.
Located in Ichihara City in Chiba Prefecture, on the eastern side of Tokyo Bay, Narconon Japan has built a strong and active presence in recent years. Through anti-drug lectures, educational outreach and meetings with public officials, Narconon staff educate communities about the dangers of drug abuse and demonstrate how people struggling with addiction can recover through a drug-free rehabilitation approach.
Community Education Through Local Businesses and Social Media

A major public awareness campaign was launched to make the Narconon program and its solutions to drug addiction better known throughout the community. Informative and visually striking posters were distributed to convenience stores, local businesses, train stations, restaurants, and other public locations where people from all walks of life would see them. Designed to speak directly to families and individuals affected by drug abuse, these posters offer hope while directing people toward practical help and information.
At the same time, Narconon expanded its outreach through social media and emails, sharing messages that address the realities of addiction and the possibility of recovery. Some posts focus on the struggles faced by families, partners, and friends of those trapped in drug abuse, helping people understand that they are not alone and that effective help is available. The campaign also works to clear away confusion and misinformation surrounding addiction by providing straightforward educational information about drugs, dependency and recovery.
Outreach to Government Leaders Brings Official Recognition
Narconon staff met with members of Japan’s House of Representatives to present the Narconon drug rehabilitation program and its drug-free approach to recovery. Their outreach efforts led to introductions to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, and Narconon Japan was subsequently officially registered and recognized as a drug addiction recovery support facility.
Educating Students, Coaches, and Parents About Drug Prevention
Schools and universities have become an important focus of Narconon Japan’s drug education efforts. At Hosei University, Kamino presented an anti-drug seminar to a full auditorium of students, encouraging them to carry this knowledge with them into their future careers and communities.

Kamino and Umakawa also met with key members of the university’s athletic program, including coaches and administrators, to discuss the important role athletic mentors can play in helping young people avoid drug use and addiction. In addition, they shared Narconon’s message with parents at the university, helping families better understand the warning signs of drug abuse and the solutions available for those struggling with addiction.
Younger students have also been included in Narconon’s preventive education efforts. During a visit to Sangenjaya Elementary School in Tokyo, Narconon staff spoke with students about the dangers of drug use and how addiction can damage lives, families, and futures. Through programs like these, Narconon Japan continues working to give young people the knowledge and confidence to make healthy, drug-free choices.
Educating Hundreds of University Athletes on Drug Prevention and Recovery
Umakawa was invited to speak to members of the Kanto Student American Football League, one of Japan’s major university athletic organizations, whose teams represent more than 50 universities across the Tokyo region. More than 800 student athletes gathered in a large auditorium to participate in a presentation on the dangers of drug abuse and the very real possibility of recovery from addiction.

Looking Ahead
As concerns over drug abuse continue to affect families and communities throughout Japan, Narconon Japan plans to further expand its educational outreach and rehabilitation awareness efforts. Through partnerships with schools, universities, athletic organizations, and government representatives, the organization hopes to reach even more people with practical information about prevention, addiction, and recovery. By continuing to share education, hope, and practical help, Narconon Japan hopes to help more people achieve healthy, stable, and drug-free lives.
