COSTS OF DRUG ABUSE
Anyone who has loved an addicted person knows: Addiction comes with enormous costs. Some of these costs are emotional and mental. The addicted person suffers from the overwhelming compulsion to use drugs and the physical sickness and deterioration that accompanies the use of alcohol and drugs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine.
What if, in a flash, the entire population of Denver was vaporized? Or Seattle, Washington, D.C. or Boston? That would equal the number of Americans we lost to drug overdoses between 1999 and 2017. We take a look at this ultra-slow phenomenon that makes it hard to see this real impact of drug abuse on our country.
Though it is a grim and miserable topic to discuss, it’s time we had a serious conversation about substance abuse and pregnancy.
It’s very likely the majority of Americans think drug abuse and addiction are problems that don’t directly affect them. Unless it’s present in their household, they’re free of any effects, right? Actually, no.…
