An Addict Now Experiencing Life as it was Meant to Be

Tom talks about recovery at Narconon Arrowhead

Life is definitely not what it was meant to be when addiction has taken hold of a person. No one knows this better than Tom. He was caught in a trap which drove away his friends and family. He was plunging into a dark abyss from which he felt there was no return.

Tom said, “By the time I was in the grip of addiction, it was a dwindling spiral. It was a downward plunge. The more you wanted to quit, the more you were depressed about the state of your life and you wanted to use as a result. That was true for me. It was just impossible to quit.”

He continued, “The result of my drug abuse on my family and my close friends was distance! It created a lot of distance between close friends and family. Either I didn’t have any friends left or those I did have wanted to get as far away from me as they could.”

Tom had tried other programs but never found success at staying clean. However, then he found Narconon. He explained his feelings. “When I arrived at Narconon I was hopeful there was something different than what I had been doing to try and stay clean. Because I had tried everything out there and failed. This was my last shot at life.”

Narconon is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program which is different than other rehab programs. Using a unique sauna-based detox which comes soon after the withdrawal process, this program gets to the core causes of addiction. One of the primary causes is the physical cravings that can crop up at any time, even after months or years of successful sobriety.

A major contributing factor to cravings is the residues of past drug abuse that become lodged in fatty tissues in the body. When residual drugs are eliminated by a regimen of vitamin supplements in combination with moderate exercise and time in a low heat sauna, the recovering addict feels clean, clear-headed and often comments that cravings have been greatly reduced.

The next step after the sauna detox is life skills training. With a series of courses, the student is on a trip of self-discovery. He (or she) learns about responsibility, personal values and integrity. He discovers his weaknesses and strengths. He is shown how to improve conditions in his life as well as repair the damaged parts from an addicted lifestyle. He finds ways to restore destroyed friendships.

Tom described his wins with this part of the program. “There was a point where I began to have some insights into what was driving my addiction. I could see this program was different and I could see a light at the end of the tunnel. I realized I may not have to be an addict for the rest of my life. It was a huge moment.”

When he completed the program, everything was different. “The result of the program at its completion was the ability to have the things I hadn’t had in thirty years. That was a dream. What I could be and what I wanted to be and all the things I thought I might be as a child were once again available. I could do those things and there was nothing that could stop me. Today life is as it was meant to be. I get to experience it. I feel it. I feel sadness, I feel pain, I feel happiness, and I feel joy. I feel! It’s pretty wonderful!”

The joy of getting back in control of his life is invaluable to a person who was once addicted to drugs or alcohol. It is a whole new future in front of him. Narconon is happy to provide addicts with lasting recovery and give society back a happy and productive member.
