Narconon to Receive Award at International Drug Symposium

3-Day Drug Symposium Set In SM

?

Several hundred of the world's top scientists are expected to attend a three-day symposium on the mechanisms of drug action beginning Thursday at the Miramar Hotel, Santa Monica.

The symposium, conducted by the Intra-Science Research Foundation, a nonprofit Santa Monica institution, will feature in-depth reports on drugs and their interaction with body systems. The reports will be presented by internationally known experts, according to foundation president Dr. Norman Kharasch.

The foundation will present Thursday its medalist award to Dr. Bernard B. Brodie of the National Institute of Health. The award recognizes Dr. Brodie's work in the field of pharmacology, a foundation spokesman said.

A second award for community service will be given Saturday to Lt. Col. Mark Jones, USMC (Ret.), the director of NARCONON, the nation's largest drug abuse rehabilitation program. The foundation, which began in 1962, will announce its five-year master plan Friday.

The sixth annual symposium is intended to present the latest scientific developments and provide a forum for discussing how drugs work and how they cause addiction.

"The support we have gotten or this year's symposium shows definitively that it will make a special contribution to the vital questions of how drugs work and how they cause addiction," Dr. Kharasch said.
