Fulfilling the Need for Effective Rehabilitation

Colombia has long been a hotspot of drug trafficking problems and violence that rose to a peak in the 1980s. In was in those years that the manufacture and trafficking of cocaine increased dramatically as the routes into the US were opened wide by clever (but criminal) entrepreneurs. Colombia had already established itself as the preeminent marijuana supplier to the US. Turf battles between marijuana and cocaine manufacturers and traffickers created a hostile, dangerous environment at home in Colombia and even in Miami—the major transit point for these drugs destined for every corner of the US.

As the cocaine exporting business grew, the drug abuse problem at home in Colombia cities was also growing. An inferior grade of cocaine called basuco—contaminated with solvents like gasoline and intensely addictive—was dumped on the market at home. Hundreds of thousands of people quickly became addicted to these drugs. The contaminants left many with permanent damage to their nervous systems.

Colombia is still at the center of the cocaine trade, even while other countries like Bolivia and Peru have boosted their participation. Basuco is still distributed in the streets of Colombian cities, almost instantly addicting its users. There needed to be a place that these people had hope they could break with their basuco habits and resume the honorable lives they had destroyed with drugs.

They finally received the help they needed Narconon Colombia opened on the outskirts of Bogotá nearly 20 years ago. Here, in these clean, bright buildings, the services that each person needed to repair the mental, physical and spiritual devastation of toxic drugs is delivered. The lush grounds offer calm relief for a person who may have been through serious trauma before arriving.

After the day’s studies are done, the students at this center may enjoy a swim in the pool, a little soccer practice out on the large lawn, or just relaxing in the lounge. Narconon Colombia embodies the new hope each person has of finding a new sober life for themselves after graduating the Narconon program.
