An Addict Gets Her Life under Control

Narconon graduate Lindsey

Lindsey found her life headed down a horrible path due to her addiction to crack cocaine and OxyContin. She became dishonest, lying and stealing from those dearest to her. She said, “I would steal from anybody and everybody to get money to get crack. Whatever I had to do, I would do it. I pawned stuff, even my mom’s jewelry.”

This is often the case with addiction. Lives become ruined, families destroyed. She added, “My life was a miserable wreck. I didn’t have a relationship with my family. I was sleeping different places every night or not sleeping. I didn’t know where I was going to end up. I had no friends or anybody really.” She knew this had to stop and with her parents’ help, went to the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program to find the lasting recovery she so desperately wanted.

The Narconon program begins with a drug-free withdrawal, so important in leaving all drugs behind and not replacing one addiction with another. With some drugs other than crack cocaine, such as benzodiazepines or heavy alcohol or opiate use, a person may need to complete a medical detox before starting the drug-free withdrawal at Narconon. But again, this is short-term medication-assisted withdrawal, not long-term substitute drugs.

Of her arrival at Narconon Lindsey stated, “When I arrived at Narconon, it was amazing. I saw all the people there laughing and having fun. There was a great camaraderie. I felt really comfortable. When I got to withdrawal, the staff were very helpful.”

Soon after withdrawal, the recovering addict starts the Narconon New Life Detoxification. This is a regimen which includes generous nutritional supplements combined with moderate daily exercise and sauna time. This flushes out the drug residues that build up in the tissues. Lindsey commented that this was the part of the program that really stood out for her. She said, “After being in the sauna I really felt great. I felt like a better person. I could smell better, taste better, see better, sleep better. I felt more energetic. It was great to get those toxins and built-up drugs from my years of drug use out of my system.”

Besides withdrawal and the unique detox done at Narconon, the participant will also study a series of courses that give him or her tools and knowledge about repairing a life of addiction and how to maintain a new sober life. These innovative courses are the final touch and really prepare the individual to go back home with a confidence that he will never have to turn to drugs or alcohol again.

Lindsey smiled and said, “I feel wonderful now that I’ve completed the Narconon program. This program saved my life. I’m a better daughter, a better granddaughter, a better friend. It’s so amazing. I’m so proud.”

Every day at Narconon, recovering addicts learn why it was they began drug use and thus know they won’t make the same mistakes. These people, young and old, leave Narconon knowing they have found themselves again and can lead productive and fulfilling lives without drugs.
