Narconon Providing Valuable Services to Hawaii Prison

The NARCONON HAWAII program has been providing valuable service to inmates in drug abuse counseling at the Hawaii State Prison for four years and is an integral part of our program. The NARCONON personnel, aside from its president, John Elliott, have changed during this time, however the delivery of service has not terminated. The instructors have all been hard working, conscientious individuals dedicated to the program.

We were very happy to accept an expanded program of fifteen hours per week of counseling in this area for inmates which we understand was made possible by utilizing CETA funds. At the present time, however, we were dismayed to learn that the CETA positions are due to terminate in little more than two weeks. The impact of such happening cannot fully be described.

We are presently presenting a reorganization plan through the appropriate channels in the State system in order to prepare for functioning as the Oahu Community Correctional Center. We are attempting to possibly allocate resources to the drug/alcohol substance abuse area but will need time to address this matter.

We would greatly appreciate your consideration in extending at least one CETA position which is allocated to the NARCONON HAWAII program in order that the quality of the present program need not adversely be affected and to also give sufficient time for us to explore alternate means to fund and/or absorb the NARCONON HAWAII positions. This extension request is for a six month period.

Thank you for your time in considering this matter.

Very truly yours
