Narconon Centers Observe United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse

united nationsFor the past 25 years, the United Nations has been sponsoring an event known as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event exists for the purpose of raising awareness across the globe of the scope and severity of drug abuse as a public health problem, as well as of the wide-ranging implications of the criminal drug trafficking trade and the impacts that it has on society.

In his remarks concerning the event, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that “Countries emerging from conflict or escaping economic decline can be overwhelmed when illicit drugs pour across their borders. The United Nations, working across peacekeeping, law enforcement, health, human rights and other related areas, is strongly committed to helping them repel illicit drugs and prevent spill-over from becoming takeover.” International drug trafficking, estimated to be in the range of $322 billion annually, and the wave of abuse and addiction that fuels that trade, can and does ruin entire nations. In this light it can be seen that drugs present one of the worst problems that we face in the world today.

The team at Narconon appreciates the U.N.’s work at fighting the scourge of drugs throughout the world, and they fully support the effort behind the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year, they have prepared a video, available online, which presents an overview of the activities on the part of Narconon staff and volunteers worldwide on last year’s U.N. anti-drug day. The video is being released ahead of the June 26th date of the event. The video shows Narconon team members engaged in a variety of public outreach activities aimed at the goal of making more people aware of the dangers of drugs and of the fact that lasting recovery is possible through Narconon. For example, in one scene volunteers from Narconon are shown talking to people on the street and handing out educational materials about drugs, while another shows a Narconon drug educator speaking to a room full of students, and another still shows Narconon International President Clark Carr appearing on stage at an event attended by others in the field of addiction treatment.

Narconon: A Force for Good Worldwide

The international scope of the Narconon video was in keeping with the spirit of the U.N., embracing activities from around the world. Locations ranged from California to Russia and Uganda. In every location, the Narconon staff and volunteers were united in the goal of spreading the word about the dangers of drug use and keeping more people from using them in the first place.

The video not only serves to promote the U.N.’s event, but it also shows the wide-ranging impact that Narconon is making in the world. From its original days when the program was first delivered to students who were serving time as inmates in an Arizona prison, to today when it is being applied and disseminated to countless people worldwide, Narconon has expanded to become a truly dynamic force in the fight against drugs. This is due partly to the unique effectiveness of the program itself, but also to the unflagging dedication that the Narconon staff have to educate the public. It’s not enough to treat an addict; rather than that, it is far easier in the long run to prevent addiction in the first place.

This attitude and outlook serves as the spark that motivates Narconon staff and volunteers to go out of their way to help out with worth causes such as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
