“We’ve come such a long way from the early days of that behind-the-bars rehab program with a few dozen students,” says Narconon International president Clark Carr. He is speaking on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the Narconon program, which was recently observed on February 19th. This date is when Narconon started delivering the program to the few dozen students in the Arizona State Prison to whom Mr. Carr refers in his remarks. Since that time, Narconon has expanded to one of the largest networks of drug rehab centers in the world, with locations spread throughout the United States and across the entire world. Narconon is now one of the most well known names in the field of addiction treatment, and it is widely recognized as having one of the highest rates of success in terms of getting people off drugs for good.
“In these forty-eight years, our dedicated staff have graduated more than 40,000 people and maintained a high success rate,” Mr. Carr goes on to say. “I’m very proud of the many recognitions and commendations our program has received from officials and institutions around the world, but it is the persons and families that we have helped that really counts.” The number 40,000 may represent only a very small percentage when compared with the vast numbers of people who suffer from the ravages of drug addiction, but it is an impressive number in light of the achievement that it entails. Over the course of nearly 5 decades, Narconon has helped more than 40,000 people to make a clean break and a fresh start in life, and has helped them to finally put their drug addiction behind them. Furthermore, there have also been countless more family members and friends who also were given a reprieve from the sufferings that their loved one’s addiction was causing in their own life. Beyond this, there is also the number of people — numbering in the hundreds of thousands — who have been helped to avoid using drugs in the first place through Narconon’s many programs in the area of drug prevention education. What started in the cell of an Arizona prison has expanded out to make a major difference in the lives of countless people across the globe.
Narconon’s Stories of Success
The story of Narconon’s success over the past 48 years can be understood with reference to any one of the countless testimonials the program has accumulated. One that Mr. Carr highlighted in his address to the anniversary was that of Kate, a young woman from Wisconsin who graduated the program. She found Narconon after previously trying to get sober and failing several times in other rehab programs. Thanks to Narconon, she was able to finally put an end to her addiction to heroin and pills, and was able to turn her life around so that she didn’t have to face another day of living in her car and worrying about how to stay warm during the harsh winter months. Now, she describes herself as a “hard worker,” and she is enjoying her life free from drugs. Kate’s story is similar to so many others over the years, stories of men and women on the brink of ruin who found hope and recovery through Narconon. Now, as the program approaches its 50th year, they continue to work with dedication to help more people enjoy the same types of successes as Kate did.
