On February 19th, the Narconon network celebrates its 49th birthday. On this day in 1966, William Benitez made the decision to found a rehab program to be called Narconon. He was in prison in Arizona at the time and he wanted to first help other inmates who were in jail because they could not stop using drugs. It took several months for him to convince prison officials to let him run the country’s first inside-the-prison rehab program but he finally was able to gather other inmates who wanted to get sober and teach them about the personal abilities he had been able to rebuild by studying the works of humanitarian and author L. Ron Hubbard. After he was released from prison, he established the first Narconon center in Los Angeles, teaching the same principles.
Now, almost 50 years later, there are Narconon rehab and prevention organizations and groups around the world. More than 38,000 individuals have graduated from this rehab program and that doesn’t even count those who graduated in the early years, before we started keeping official records.
Likewise, we’ll never exactly know how many people have been reached with our drug prevention curriculum. In Russia, one of our drug educators reached more than 250,000 people in six years. In Southern California, one drug ed team reached 100,000 young people last year. And in Nepal, the center in Kathmandu has reached out to more than 650,000 people in person and via radio and television, to educate them on the dangers of drug use. Continue reading

Over the course of the past few years, more and more people have become aware of a drug known as synthetic marijuana. Also referred to commonly by the brand names Spice and K2, or by the euphemistic “herbal incense.” Whatever name you use to talk about this drug, it is a highly dangerous and potentially addictive drug which is in fact not a single chemical substance as is normally the case with drugs, but rather a class of substances which share similar chemical properties and which all have effects similar to cannabis when consumed by humans. Many Americans look forward to the holiday season as a time of ongoing festivities, with parties and feasts where they can enjoy drinks with family and friends and overindulge in food and desserts. For others, however, the period from Thanksgiving through New Years Eve represents a time when the stress of trying to keep up with everything and live up to others’ expectations, when the constant reminders of how little one’s life has improved over the past year and how alone one is, and when the ready availability of alcohol all add up to a potential crisis. Many people who have already been struggling with something of a substance abuse problem go over the edge into having a full-blown addiction. Continue reading

Many people who are considering getting into rehab so that they can finally quit abusing drugs or alcohol hesitate to do so during the holidays. They don’t want to miss out on everything, or maybe they are concerned about letting their loved ones down by not being there for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Likewise, the family of an addict might sometimes encourage him or her to put rehab off until after the holidays, not wanting to be apart and thinking maybe that the spirit of the season will somehow help to provide a buffer against the problems that come with substance abuse. Fortunately, it doesn’t always have to be an either/or choice. Those who choose Narconon Arrowhead for their rehab program get to spend the holidays with their loved ones, while also making progress on their recovery from addiction during the holidays. If you ask most people what they are thankful for this Thanksgiving, you will hear many say that what they most value is their family and friends. They are thankful for the time they get to spend together, and for the fact that they can look forward to many more years of happiness with their loved ones. In this spirit, Narconon Arrowhead is sharing alcohol abuse prevention tips this Thanksgiving to help people across the country to keep those they care about safe from the dangers of binge drinking and alcoholism during the holidays.
